The Rann-Thanagar War #1 (of 6)

May 16, 2005 | Comics

The Rann-Thanagar War #1 (of 6) Dave Gibbons, Ivan Reis DC Comics $3.50/$2.50 US *** 1/2 (out of five) Forget the big-budget movie coming out this month — the real star wars are taking place between two staple planets in the DC Universe. Rann, home to human space adventurer Adam Strange since the 1950s, has been attacked by Thanagar, world of the hawkpeople — including the former Hawkman and Hawkwoman. It’s all over a simple accident — one that utterly destroyed Thanagar and left its people as refugees on Rann. When Strange involves the current Hawkman and Hawkgirl and the newly reformed Green Lantern Corps. gets thrown into the mix, the stage is set for a interplanetary dispute of epic proportions. It’s about time DC spent more time developing its great cast of space characters and this Infinite Crisis prequel, written by Dave Gibbons with art by the gifted Ivan Reis, is a fine start.

NYC Mech: Beta Love #1

May 16, 2005 | Comics

NYC Mech: Beta Love #1 Ivan Brandon, Miles Gunter, Andy MacDonald Image Comics $3.65/$2.95 US *** 1/2 (out of five) Welcome back, NYC Mech. After creating a buzz with their work on the two-issue miniseries debut last year, Ivan Brandon, Miles Gunter and Andy MacDonald are back with the follow up: Beta Love, a “robotic street crime romance.” Set in a modern-day New York City where all living things are replaced by robots, Beta Love opens with Quentin, a bus driver trying to keep out of trouble, walking — or rather driving — right into it, thanks to a spiky-haired sister who’s hijacked his ride. Visually impressive and thoroughly engrossing, Beta Love is an unusual blend of genres that works surprisingly well together and promises great things to come.

Conan And The Jewels Of Gwahlur #1 (of 3) P. Craig Russell Dark Horse Comics $2.99 US *** 1/2 (out of five) It’s hard to beat the combination of a great hero and a great creator. Writer/artist P. Craig Russell (Sandman) takes a stab at the world’s most famous barbarian in this adaptation of one of Robert E. Howard’s most famous Conan tales. While infiltrating the court of Keshan, in search of the Jewels of Gwahlur, the Cimmerian hero runs afoul of an old rival, who himself is in search of the fabled treasure. Will a superstitious leader and an undead oracle stand in the way of Conan’s quest? Russell gives readers a different look at the barbarian hero than in his monthly book in a rare, and all too brief, treat.
